*ARTICLE I. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION*
The Orangutan Conservation Services Project (OCSP) is a USAID sponsored
program that runs through September 30, 2010. OCSP is a crisis response
program that aims to maximize protection and long-term survival of viable
orangutan populations in the wild. The program works to arrest, reduce or
possibly eliminate threats to orangutans as well as address the major
drivers behind those threats. Main drivers of orangutan habitat loss and
population decline include forest conversion, unsustainable logging and
wildlife trafficking.

OCSP recognizes that media plays important roles in supporting the success
of OCSP’s programs implementation by increasing public awareness as part of
advocacy and public education campaigns of orangutans conservation.
Throughout 2008, OCSP (Orangutan Conservation Services Program) in
cooperation with grantees have conducted a series of activities to increase
the media coverage of Orangutans issues. The activities included:
Environmental Journalism workshop aiming on the issues of Orangutans,
Fellowship, and Award involving journalists from Jakarta, North Sumatra,
Aceh, Central Kalimantan, West Kalimantan and South Kalimantan. The entire
series of activities are designed to increase the interest and media
attention to highlight the Orangutans issues that have long been neglected
in the main news agenda of Indonesia newspapers both nationally and locally.
Based on the lessons learned from last year activities, OCSP is planning to
conduct media refreshment workshop and editors meeting. The aim is to refresh
